To make cider you will need kitchen gadgets. One of the greatest things about fall is homemade apple cider. Not only is it super easy to make, it’s also the perfect way to use up all those extra apples you planned to bake into apple pie after going apple picking. Warm, full of spice, and just sweet enough, it’s the perfect drink to have on the back burner when you’re hosting guests– it will make your home smell like fall! .

water-just enough to cover the sliced apples.

Sugar 3/4 cup white sugar

spices cinnamon and allspice

You do not have to remove apple cores or peel the skin of the apples off. At the very end of cooking you will strain out all the little stuff. The skin adds flavor. Make sure to press the apples with a potato masher while you are straining them to get out all the juice.

Directions

  1. Place apples in a large stockpot; cover with water by at least 2 inches. Stir in sugar, cinnamon, and allspice. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Boil, uncovered, for 1 hour. Reduce heat; cover and simmer for 2 hours.
  2. Strain apple mixture through a fine-mesh sieve; discard solids. Drain cider again through a cheesecloth-lined sieve.
  3. Refrigerate cider until cold, about 4 hours.

Can be served hot or cold.


How to Store Apple Cider

Store the leftover apple cider in a tightly covered pitcher or jar in the refrigerator for up to one week. If you’d like to keep it longer, you can either can the cider or freeze it.
